How to assign an asset to a location
Location records where an asset physically lives. It answers the question: where does this thing belong?
Locations belong to a Site. You assign the asset to a Location only — UniAsset does not show a separate Site field on the asset. The Site comes from the Location you choose.
Steps
- Open the asset from Dashboard → Assets (Individual).
- Use the assignment panel.
- Choose an Assigned Location.
- Save.
Every change writes an event to the asset's timeline.
Locations are hierarchical
Locations nest to any depth inside a Site — building → floor → room. Assign to the most specific level that will stay true.
A desktop belongs in Room 302. A forklift that roams the warehouse belongs at the warehouse level, not parked in Aisle 4 (which changes daily).
You can assign an asset to a Location under any Site. Moving it to a Location under a different Site updates which Site it sits under, because Site is derived from the Location.
Location is not the same as…
Site — the operational boundary (plant, campus, warehouse). Managed at Dashboard → Sites. Assets sit under a Site only through their Location.
Geo-position — a physical coordinate pushed in by a tracker. Sending coordinates does not change the asset's assigned location.
Custody — who is currently holding it. Checking an asset out does not move it.
Department — the cost centre that owns it, independent of where it physically sits.

Common mistakes
Creating locations for everything. Two or three levels is enough. Add depth when you audit at that level.
Encoding department into location names. "IT Store Room" is fine; "IT" as a location is not.
Using location for status. "In Repair" is a custom status, not a location.
Treating a facility as a Location. Create a Site for each plant or campus, then create Locations under it.
